Race to connect your two sides of the board with an unbroken chain of stones.

How to play

Goal

Black connects the top and bottom edges of the board; White connects the left and right edges. First to complete an unbroken chain of their color wins. Hex never ends in a draw — once the board fills, exactly one side has connected.

Your turn

Place one stone of your color on any empty cell.

Swap rule (optional)

To offset the first move's advantage, White may — only immediately after Black's first stone — choose to swap places instead of placing a stone: White becomes Black (keeping that first stone) and the original player continues as White. This is the standard tournament-fair way to play Hex.

Rule options

  • Board size

Larger boards take longer and favor deeper strategy.

  • Swap rule (pie rule)

White may swap places instead of moving, right after Black's first stone — the standard fair-play rule.

  • Turn timer

Seconds per turn before a move is auto-played. Off means untimed.
